Spent The Heat Wave At Semiahmoo

We decided to leave town when we found out the temperature was going over 100 degrees this week. We pack Ollie in assorted luggage in the convertible and headed three hours north on I-5 to Blaine, Washington, the city right before the Canadian border. The Semiahmoo Resort is on a sand spit out on the coast of the Straits of Juan DeFuca and is one of the premier get-a-ways in the state with full spa service, two golf courses rated in Golf Digest, and two nice restaurants on the resort.

We just kicked back and enjoyed the location. We had lunch the first day we were there at Packers, an English style pub, with indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outdoors for lunch and had some really excellent Halibut and Chips. That night we came back and had dinner inside the pub. We had the special which was; prime rib, garlic mashed potatoes, Caesar salad, with their special bread....and it was only $15 each. Every aspect of the meal was extremely well prepared and very very tasty. After dinner we took our porch chairs out to the edge of the beach and sipped some B&B that we had brought along for the occasion, and watched the sunset and enjoyed the end of a great summer day in the NW. I also brought along a couple of cigars to enjoy with my brandy. It was a really nice evening and we stayed out there until about 11pm.

Ollie got to go swimming and retrieved a giant piece of sea kelp. The bulbous end looked like a ball floating in the water so he drug all 15 feet of it into shore. The water was a good place for a dog to be in the 100 degree heat.

We really just relaxed, napped, read, listened to music, etc. and let the hot day pass. Thursday, day two, was about ten degrees cooler and much easier to enjoy. We sat our chairs in the grass outside our room and spent most of the day out there. We had breakfast inside that morning at Stars, the other restaurant at the resort and it again was much better than average. We were so full from breakfast that we skipped lunch and snacked on some crackers and smoked salmon that Pat and Ed Tatman had given us. We brought a couple of bottles of champagne with use and kept them in ice and drank that with the salmon.

Dinner the second night was the best. I had roast salmon stuffed with crab, a variation of mac & cheese for my pasta dish, along with veggies of the season. We split an appetizer of a half dozen oysters on the half shell. The oysters came with a small cup of iced sherbet that had a very unique fresh minty taste and was to cleanse the pallet before the main course. Susan had scallops for dinner and said they were delicious. Dessert for Susan was like a chocolate cake torte which looked almost lethal. I chose the creme brulee and we both had hot coffee as the sun went down. Again we took the chairs out to the water, drank B&B, and I smoked a cigar as the sun went down. There was no wind either night to speak of and we sat out in our shorts and short sleeved shirts until after 11pm.

This morning we had breakfast at the resort before leaving at 10am for the three hour drive home, 70 degrees and very nice with the top down.

I would recommend this place to anyone for a quick getaway and they have nice packages. Our room was $139 a night and came with a $25 restaurant credit. The food was excellent and the prices very reasonable, especially for a resort property. I included some picture of the many sitting areas, the pool, and restaurants as well as our room. And they do allow dogs, small to medium they said, but Ollie is 85 lbs. and we saw several dogs there bigger than him.

Well, back to reality!
